In October, 1962, U-2 surveillance photos reveal that the Soviet Union is in the process of placing nuclear weapons in Cuba. These weapons have the capability of wiping out most of the Eastern and Southern United States in minutes if they become operational. President John F. Kennedy and his advisors must come up with a plan of action against the Soviets. Kennedy is determined to show that he is strong enough to stand up to the threat, and the Pentagon advises U.S. military strikes against Cuba—which could lead the way to another U.S. invasion of the island. However, Kennedy is reluctant to follow through, because a U.S. invasion could cause the Soviets to retaliate in Europe. A nuclear showdown appears to be almost inevitable. Can it be prevented?

In the 1960s, few realized how close the world came to nuclear winter. Even today, with all the resources at hand, the less attention that prevented World War III. One thing is certain, America was very lucky to have had as President of the United States, John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood), during the nearly fatal "13 Days". As the man thought of the president, Kennedy was fortunate to have in his cabinet men of intellect and reason. Its principal is confident his younger brother, Robert Kennedy (Steven Culp), which proved invaluable as Attorney General. When the world learned of the nuclear threat ninety miles away, Kennedy came to rely heavily on his political adviser O'Donald Kenny (Kevin Costner), which proved invaluable at critical moments that could have had disastrous results Heads of State Joint Chiefs had their way. In addition, Kennedy was definitely fortunate to have selected as his ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson (Michael Fairman), which was toe to toe with the Russian Valerian Zorin (Oleg Vidov) and not down. The film is dramatic and terrifyingly exact date with Black and White and real footage of scripts verbal hidden recordings of oval office. What we know today, the Administration has followed the prodding of the military, who have launched World War III as the Russian military in Cuba, has really short-range nuclear warheads at their disposal. This is a frightening film for rational people. ****
Thirteen brings the good old days (and I mean good) movie nailbiter here, and even if you know the story (hence, knowing the outcome), there are still some good things here. Things that might not have been known to the average American at that time is now revealed in the tension that is exciting only slightly relieved by Kevin Costner who really does not need to be there (and has a strong accent that makes JFK JFK in this film). The look in the Cuban missile crisis here is the heart of the film and it works pretty well. Not very good, and if their quest for a historical thriller, this is the one for the season. B +
The movie Thirteen Days was a very well-told story of the missile crisis in Cuba, which was the closest the U.S. came to nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Shown through the eyes of the assistant to the president, Kenny O 'Donnell, the film shows the interior of the thoughts and emotions of President John F. Kennedy and his advisers, as it tried to avoid World War III. After a U2 spy plane points Soviet missiles met in Cuba, President Kennedy and his cabinet should decide the best course of action to take to keep the missiles from being used to kill Americans. Since I do not live in the moment, Thirteen Days does a very good job of showing what happened with just a couple of things that are not historically accurate. An example of a historically inaccurate thing with the film is that Kevin Costner's character, Kenny, was not actually a real character. However, all the other characters are real and played an important role in preventing a nuclear holocaust.
