There are similarities between Ray Lawrence of "Jindabyne" and his latest film "Lantana" - a corpse and its implications for life and dysfunctional. However, that "Lantana" that offers some hope and resolution, "Jindabyne" leaves unresolved all in a bleak path that will leave unsatisfied most of the spectators, even cheated. The story - after a fisherman's discovery of a corpse floating in a remote river - is based on a story by Raymond Carver. It became an element of Robert Altman's 1993 classic set of "shortcuts". Lawrence used this item for an exhibition and exploration of relationships within a small Australian community under stress. The film raises some moral questions "Would you allow the discovery of a corpse ruin your good weekend?" and more poignant for Australians "Is it any difference if the dead person was an aboriginal?" The acting, especially by Laura Linney and Gabriel Byrne, is commendable. And there are elements of mysticism reinforced by the music disturbing, not unlike "picnic at Hanging Rock." If all this sounds like the basis for a great movie - be prepared for a let down, the pace is very slow and the murder is shown near the beginning, thereby eliminating the element of mystery. And so we stayed with those lives and devastated a final blank.
Before seeing this movie here I read a review stating that this movie could be one of the best movies ever? scene by scene has been tension grows well ... of annoying characters in this movie. From the girl talking gibberish and trying to drown the child, for the murderer only runs on without any warning (and that was the man on the beach talking to the guy !?).. things seem to happen, and then without going into this movie. As I saw it seemed that the film was going in one direction, then simply do not go anywhere, but in a new direction ... and on ... and He's big, but the writing is horrible. Each character in each scene, said or done something so incredible, unrealistic and the reactions of fellow cast / extras are just weird. There are no resolutions to problems developed in the whole film, so it is confusing and, ultimately, a great waste of time.
Ray Lawrence has done it again. This film made me see the Australian landscape in a way that I did not actually see Picnic at Hanging Rock. The sense of boys as the start of the trip is somewhat Hitchcockian, because we know we're going to see the body at some point soon - they simply do not know when. There is a sense of oppression and expectation superimposed on the natural beauty that holds you transfixed. The film can be criticized because it does not try to solve anything in aa material level. However, Lawrence is more interested in the internal life of his characters - each of them. It also does not want to hand us the presentation on a plate. Copies of the stories that developed gradually, makes us think about the characters as we are to knowing what drew them to their current lives. I'm glad to see a movie made for people to think, rather than spoon feeding us cliches about how life can be difficult for the players. Water plays an important role throughout the movie, from the river where the fishermen found the body, to Lake Jindabyne, and the ghost stories about the city drowned. We dive into the lives of the characters, finding deeper and deeper layers of motivation as we move from the hot surface of their lives to the colder and more brittle hidden depths. We see that the body in the river acts as a sort of stand-in for each character in the transformation of death and rebirth of the spirit. This is another masterpiece of work of a master filmmaker.
This is a "typical" Ray Lawrence film. Similar in their dark vision of the world, his previous' Lantana '. The same slow, deliberate, menacing pace, drawing out the bad in every corner (shades of David Lynch of Twin Peaks "here). Our good ol 'boy Aussies (a transplanted an Irishman), in a weekend of trout fishing trip away from their wives, "park" the corpse of a murdered woman discovered floating in its flow. They continue with their fishing, not reporting the find until leaving the site - for which they are intensely and relentlessly attacked by one and all on their return. The fact that the dead woman is a person of Aboriginal Australia joins the "policy" of its impact offense. Through all this, the real murderer in series (which we see in the first scene) is hovering near threatening. An interesting, if somewhat cynical, given the highly charged atmosphere between the racial in the Australian community: white guilt and 'politically correct'. Who are the real villains here? Our "politically incorrect" (and morally vacuous) players? Or the murderer? According to Lawrence, the old, apparently. Taught and tense throughout, the film lacks a real resolution, instead of opting rather a "weak" through putting an end to the redemption of the fishermen.
