This panoramic tale of Savannah's eccentricities focuses on a murder and the subsequent trial of Jim Williams: self made man, art collector, antiques dealer, bon vivant and semi-closeted homosexual. John Kelso a magazine reporter finds himself in Savannah amid the beautiful architecture and odd doings to write a feature on one of William's famous Christmas parties. He is intrigued by Williams from the start, but his curiosity is piqued when he meets Jim's violent, young and sexy lover, Billy. Later that night, Billy is dead, and Kelso stays on to cover the murder trial. Along the way he encounters the irrepressible Lady Chablis, a drag queen commedienne, Sonny Seiler, lawyer to Williams, whose famous dog UGA is the official mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs, an odd man who keeps flies attached to mini leashes on his lapels and threatens daily to poison the water supply, the Married Ladies Card Club, and Minerva, a spiritualist. Between being Jim's buddy, cuddling up to a torch singer, meeting every eccentric in Savannah, participating in midnight graveyard rituals and helping solve the mysteries surrounding Billy's murder, Kelso has his hands full.

Like many other fans of the novel, I decided to see 'Midnight', despite the unflattering comments. After all, reasoned, Kevin Spacey is a wonderful actor, and even a bad adaptation of a wonderful novel may be tolerable. How bad could it be?? I was wrong. Regardless of whether you're a fan of the book or a "newcomer", this movie is sure to disappoint. The novel, which consists of a series of hilarious character sketches followed by a brief mystery, has been a remarkable mangrove worldly mystery plot. The writer also threw in a sub-romantic, presumably because the filmgoing public demands it (or perhaps because the director's daughter needed a role?). Finally, Sabana de grace, charm and quirkiness - conveyed so well in the book - has completely eluded the filmmakers. Oh, and the movie is 2 hours too long. The only saving grace of this film is to see the charismatic Lady Chablis, played by herself. However, it is much more fun to read about it in order to save you the misery and grab the book.
John Cusack plays John Kelso, New York, a writer who goes to Savannah, Georgia to interview Jim Williams (Kevin Spacey), a wealthy socialite and art connoisseur who likes to give parties. While in Savannah, Kelso gets involved in murder, voodoo, and some eccentric characters. Kelso is an argument in the should-stand-by John Berendt, author of the book of nonfiction in which the script of the film is based. With intriguing title of the movie, maybe I expected too much. I really do not know what director Eastwood is trying to say here. The film is disjointed recharged with subplots, including a murder and subsequent trial, a romance, a character study of Williams, a parade of strange characters largely irrelevant for other subplots, a journey of a city in the South, and some voodoo thrown in. The oscillated between good (Kevin Spacey) to pretty mediocre for the poor. The cinematography and production design are sufficient. This film has entertainment value for fans Kevin Spacey. But the story itself lacks focus, and that led nowhere. In fact, the ending is ambiguous, in a kind of irritating way. The main problem with "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is its questionable rationale. Why is this done? Just because a film is based on a true event does not guarantee a favorable outcome of cinema, especially if the script of the film digresses significantly its source. Better management would have helped a lot, like a complete rewrite of the screenplay, based on a premise more cohesive.
The plots and sub-plots make this a movie that shows more of himself into each display. Of course, Spacey and Cusack are great. The fantastic score Eastwood shows the great love of music. I have not read the book and had no preconceived ideas. It's surprising how many of those who read the book were disappointed by the film. I am going to take your advice and do not read the book and I have both the DVD and the soundtrack and enjoy experiencing them.
Yes, I will admit, this adaptation of the book is not as good as it could have been. The writer obviously felt the need to add an unnecessary romantic sub-participation of John Cusack's character, probably for the reason that he thought it would be more devoted to the hearing. Unfortunately, it did not work. This film is not a film can only sit and watch. It gets incredibly dull in some places, and must pay more attention has been paid to Jude Law, the nature of his death will not have the same shock factor that it did in the book only had about 10 lines of dialogue. However, the results make it worthwhile. Kevin Spacey oozes charisma and is perfect as the soft Jim Williams. Paul Hipp is also a charming Joe Odom. Dorothy Loudon is wonderful as Serena Dawes, as The Lady Chablis ... Who better to play El Gran Sabana of the empress that the same lady? I thought that John Cusack was well into his role ... Indeed it is undoubtedly better, and in some places spends about 6 minutes looking like a stunned mullet. The design and production of the film is BEAUTIFUL. As soon as I go on my OE, I am of the departure of Savannah. Conclusion: A travel difficult in some places, but overall it's a good experience. (I'd recommend reading the book that does not help end)
Eastwood took the challenge to condense a richly rewarding book of more than 200 pages in a film of 2 hours. He manages to convey the essence of the story, however strongly recommend that you read the book before seeing the film. The book is as much a story about himself and Savannah of the unconventional characters who live there, as it is a theater hall. In fact half of the book is devoted to each of these topics. If you read the book you understand and appreciate the characters more depth. The book will explain by example: -- Why is Joe Odom wiring of the house and what makes it tick? What was that the cloud of dust that erupted from the prosecutor of the chair where he sat? What happened to the other main characters from Jim after the death of William? The addition of the author's female love interest was strange and unnecessary, especially considering that the real author is gay.
You know, when I saw for the first time Kevin Spacey in Swimming with Sharks, I was impressed. That in a time to kill. But now that I see in this dump of a movie, I simply do not know. With the talent they had in this movie, could have been much better. I was really disappointed. Mr Hipp
