Regina Lambert returns to Paris from a ski holiday in Switzerland to find that her husband has been murdered. She is later told by CIA agent Hamilton Bartholemew that Charles Lambert was one of five men who stole $250,000 in gold from the U.S. government during World War II, and the government wants it back. The money was not found among his possessions, and Regina can shed no light on its whereabouts. Later that day she is visited by Peter Joshua, whom she had met briefly while on holiday. When her husband's former partners in crime, who were double-crossed by Charles, start calling her looking for the money, Peter offers to help find it. Thus begins an elaborate charade in which nothing is what it seems to be.

If Audrey Hepburn fell in love bloomed and the luminous woman in Paris as Jo Stockton in FUNNY FACE, Charade - Stanley Donen thriller with very Hitchockian Saul Bass-like opening credits - is not just fall in love but in danger some of which are ill-style with some 250,000 U.S. dollars after that of her late husband stole during the war. A convoluted plot in which Cary Grant and Walter Matthau swap identities of two more schizophrenic suffering from multiple personality disorder, which requires watching closely and maintain a marker, Charade is very simple - because after all the world is 250000 and Hepburn must be based on the grant for the protection, even if it may sometimes be shaded, it is inevitable that a romance will develop even when things get hairy (and do). Both Grant and Hepburn exude an irresistible charm of a couple and it is a pity not to work together after this movie because, despite the constant twists and turns and changes of identity in the plot, they are the ones who light up the screen in your presence alone. Charade was remade in 2002 as the Jonathan Demme THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE Thandie Newton with channeling Audrey was always on the screen in the lead role and Mark Wahlberg in the role of Cary Grant.

I must say I was shocked by the high ratings many other reviews have given Charade. While not a horrible movie (I'm qualifying that 6 out of 10), is not at all in the same league as other great films on IMDb top of the 250! I am aware of dry humor, that any attempts Charade, however, the quality of the writing is such that the humor is almost always not to raise a laugh. You can see the writer is trying very hard to be smart, urban, but it was not only a great success. Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant are their usual marvelous same, but it is very difficult to swallow the character of Hepburn of options, both in the survival and romance. However, the cast is solid, and the plot of manipulation, despite some holes in logic mentioned in other reviews, not ultimately the participation of the viewer enough that boredom never sets in.
