Unusual in that it keeps teasing with the possibility of a murder, murder, but only happens after 80 minutes of screen time have passed! This does not really work too well: the murder investigation seems almost like an afterthought, and it is not difficult to guess the real murderer (the suspect goings in the title in the hotel and a priest of the disappearance seems more important). On the positive side, it is clear from the first shots that women in a director, Mary McMurray, has a film camera eye over many of her male colleagues who have worked in this series, and Caroline Blakiston Meanwhile, as the attraction , Anarchists, middle-aged adventurers Bess Sedgwick and Helena Michell as his beautiful, impulsive daughter are well cast. I've been an Anglophile since I was a child, but only recently had the patience to read Agatha Christie books (such detail!). Bertram's Hotel became one of my favorites because Miss Marple goes to the big city and visits to places he knew as a child. We get a bit of Little Jane and what they enjoy. The British have always been great in adapting books to film. This Bertram's is an excellent example. It maintains the integrity of a book by condensation, while in a short period of time. Bertram's Hotel is all that and more. The plot, characters and environment are beautifully done and wonderful to watch. An aging Joan Hickson (one of his later Marples) plays properly aging Miss Marple. A friend replies "She must be 100 years," or something along those lines. The mystery is intriguing and I love to see one of my favorite sleuths still able to see everything for what it really is, while fooling around the world with their looks older. I love the actress who plays Bess Sedgwick. She hits the mark Christie wrote her and she is fun to watch. In fact, much of it takes care of me, but some things about his character are not so hot. That goes for almost all the characters with one exception. Vadislaus Marinovsky is appropriately arrogant, yet in keeping with the book. This episode of the series with Joan Hickson Miss Marple is absolutely wonderful. I bought the DVD set and see him often. A WORD OF CAUTION: If you're a rookie, not confuse the two series. The new Marple series with Geraldine McEwan is terrible! |
