I actually seen "Red Dawn" in the first place and would be my preference over this, but one said, this is an excellent movie. It is true that I am a son to this type of film and I also have the utmost respect for our military. While this movie is fictional, this kind of thing has happened many times, some stories have been told more often then others etc. The idea is definitely plausible. The young kids just entering high school in the army and sent off to Vietnam only to get caught and later was sent to prison camps. This could not possibly have been cast better. The late and great Robert Stack (RIP) and Gene Hackman are particularly well suited for their roles. Randall "Tex" Cobb is fun to watch all the time in which the camera and (spoiler alert) is particularly sad when it dies. The training scenes were very well thought out and executed. The model prison camp in Texas and wakes up the morning ritual that makes Gene Hackman through them are fun to watch. The scene of fighting between Tex Cobb Patrick Swayze and definitely worth a few laughs. Two thumbs up, definitely worth seeing a couple of times.
Uncommon Value is perhaps the most credible of the "return to Vietnam to rescue prisoners of war" movies. The film ceters in attempts to COL.RHODES played by Gene Hackman find her child missing in action in Vietnam. It meets a small group of Vietnam veterans + a military veteran of the last to return to Vietnam through Thailand. Along the way the Thai police and the CIA, confiscate their weapons to new weapons are purchased ... WW2 vintage. The team is going to the area and hijinks result. This is a great war movie and a great action movie adventure. Of note are Gene Hackman, Tim Thomerson, and Fred Ward. These three actors give fine performances in Vietnam vets who face war and their return. In fact, everyone in this movie is good. This film is a departure from the false heroics of Rambo and tells a story more human. The MACGREGOR og character is symbolic of someone like H. Ross Perot. This movie is worth seeing and is an excellent production values and well directed. Of note is the fact that Wings Hauser, had a role in the production of this movie.
This film is not the "real Vietnam" experience. To do this, just watch movies 2: Apocalypse Now and Hamburger Hill. All the rest are Baloney, or worse. (OK, it is 2008 and now I am editing this to include We were soldiers like another great film from Vietnam. It totally captivated me and took me back, like Apocalypse Now. When I was I could not move from my seat until that after the cleaning crew had finished.) Uncommon Valor, however, remains a great movie in Vietnam for all to see. It was uneven as hell, so you have to be flexible. I suggest you have fun with the goofball stuff, to lead the fight against linking things, ignore the requirement to link things. Look more closely at each one is a veteran of Vietnam and presented hired, and learn. Then, enjoy what the characters and the actors who bring them to life. (I loved the most.) I was an Infantryman in Vietnam. This film is the only film from Vietnam, the only one that ever brought tears to my eyes. I was surprised by the power of their completion. It is overwhelming to me. When it comes right to her, take this movie seriously.
