Det. John Hobbes is convinced that when killer Edgar Reese is executed, all of his troubles are over. But when people he knows and people on the street start to sing the same tune that Reese sang in the gas chamber, and those same people taunt him, he is told that maybe the cursed fallen angel Azazel is behind it all. Azazel is cursed to roam the Earth without a form, and he can switch bodies by any contact, making him hard to track. When Hobbes is forced to kill a man possessed by Azazel, he must clear his name while protecting his family and others from the evil, vengeful Azazel.

8 stars, 10. I love movies with a touch of the supernatural, especially those dealing with angels, demons and that sort of thing. That is what makes "Fallen" more than just another police drama. Denzel does a good job playing Detective John Hobbs, who for reasons that are unclear, was put on the wrong side of a demon. The investigation of a former case of a policeman named Robert Milano, John Hobbs comes into contact with the daughter of Milan, Gretta (played by Embeth Davidtz), who teaches a course on the Angels at a university. Gretta is able to fill in some of John of what is happening, and the rest is meeting as it goes along. I would have liked a bit of romance between John and Gretta, and though it seems a little interested in others, there is not even so much as a kiss between them. Although the film was made in 1998, Hollywood was reportedly still afraid of showing a black man and white woman romantic or sexually involved with each other. The movie has a lot of thrilling and suspenseful moments, but it also has some padding like most of the films - the policemen sitting around the station to chew the fat, John and his brother and nephew are talking about nothing, some shooting or baskets. WARNING: The following paragraph contains a spoiler! While this is a good movie, the movie does not, to explain adequately why John Hobbs is immune to Azazel at one point, but not immune to a later point.

A chilling psychological thriller pits Denzel Washington against a murderer who is basically a ghost that transfers melee. I liked and was hooked for a minute. See if they have a chance! From *** ****
