Arguably the most Meryl Streep performance ... and lord knows that the woman has become in a few during his career! I was delighted, beguiled, enchanted, smashed, and ultimately reduced to an empty tank and drained by the end of the film, which took several days to fully recover. Their vulnerability and honesty are as inevitable as his demons. And you can not stop being such a real sense of conflict and compassion, duty and despair ... this film completely melted in front of my face, while the consolidation of admiration and fear that they rarely experience of a player's performance. All due respect to both Kline and MacNichol fine for his image, but in reality the film begins and ends with the disturbing Streep, brilliant and immensely human turn as Sophie! This is a "must see" even a movie gut wrenching experience! Absolutely incredible!
If the Oscars were to take the best actress ever winner - Janet Gaynor to Helen Hunt - Meryl Streep will undoubtedly have a good chance of winning against him. She gives a fascinating, totally credible performance as Sophie, a shy Polish woman who befriends Sting (Peter MacNicol), as she tells of her past tortured in a concentration camp. As always, it does not blame his foreign accent, and puts his all into his performance, better than she ever do. The film itself is very good, too - that can drag at times (to 2 1 / 2 hours), but definitely worth a look.
Director Alan Pakula must have been falling over himself with joy at the presence of its three main actors. Each give impressive performances, but Streep is to take your breath away. Therefore, much has been written already about his impeccable representation of Sophie, who has to be the most heartbreaking character ever seen in the movie, I can only add my support to the view that here Streep gives the best performance ever seen by an actor. Moreover, I agree that the Academy should look at this performance as the watermark for the Best Actress Oscar. Inevitably, there will never be a party, but I think Gwyneth Paltrow won the same award for his role in "Shakespeare in Love" is laughable. Kevin Kline is brilliant as the creepy yet endearing Nathan, while Peter MacNicol is the character whose excellent storytelling and acting in the movie he conveys. I realized that delinquency Pauline Kael, the most ridiculously most respected film critic of all time, once again shows his cynicism in finding fault with much of the film: I will have none of it: it is completely mobile, without having to resort to or the overloud cliché, the music's disturbing influence on our emotions. Quite simply, the item - Sophie's tragic life and (in) ability to come to terms with what has happened to it - is enough to do this on their own. The final box is for me, perhaps the most beautiful I've ever seen, and the movie will stay with the viewer long after.
Meryl Streep as Sophie in performance is simply the best performance ever captured on film. Period. The subtlety and depth with which reveals Sophie's wounds are simply fascinating. She is both radiantly beautiful, yet deeply wounded. She is lovely, yet vulnerable. She is someone who wants love, however, someone whose pain keeps you from a distance. This film takes the viewer on a journey emotionally intense. Anyone, but especially who is a parent, would have to be a rock emotionally not to be absolutely obsessed with this story. As much as I have studied and pondered the Holocaust, this movie I have been connected to the most emotional I've been before. This film, and Ms. Streep's performance, are a gift to humanity.
This film is almost perfect, if there is such a thing. Meryl Streep gives best performance ever as Sophie. In fact, his performance here is quite possibly the best film acting I've ever seen. (It's really that good.) Plus there are still more - the music, direction, writing, the actors - all are excellent. Please note that this film is very moving and tragic, but it's very well done. You will laugh and mourn - that will fill you with hope and despair - that will make you appreciate life and understand the pain.
I gave this movie a very solid 10. The performance of Streep is perfection in her best, there is a failure by her throughout the film. Bringing scenes of romance, passion for life, misery, and joy, allowing the film to get a hold of you and not let go until the end, as all great movies should be. Other performances are equally great, but it is Streep as "very credible" that Sophie will take you by storm. Without a doubt one of the best films of the 80s. Beware!
Although sometimes achingly literary, emotional moments of real power are provided by the smooth narration, the cinematography of Nestor Almendros unforgettable, Marvin Hamlisch quietly making the score, touching performance by Peter MacNichol, and a seminal performance by Meryl Streep, one that Kim Stanley (the famous actress / teacher and mother of Oscar-nominated Jessica Lange in 'Frances' in the same year) proclaimed, "the titanic image of his generation." No matter what your initial feelings about this movie, I encourage you to go back and take Streep in the dark dance of loss, madness and, finally, painful redemption.
"Sophie's Choice" should be compulsory viewing for any member of the panel of the vote that will decide the winners of the Academy Award. Quite simply, Meryl Streep is the performance of the reference to the 'Best Actress' category. I've seen a lot of movies, but has no performance ever (and never) of his party. The way she embodies Sophie goes beyond explanation. It is too much and achieves move from words. It's almost offensive to think that Julia Roberts was awarded the same statue of 'Erin Brockovich'! Apart from the impressive central performance from the wonderful Ms. Streep, that there are many other reasons to see this movie. Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol are excellent, the cinematography is beautiful (in particular taking the Brooklyn Bridge), the result is disturbing ... I could go. Although some critics have berater "Sophie's Choice" as a mere platform for Meryl Streep as an actress, I urge you to overlook this point of view. The film succeeds admirably in bringing to life of a terrible event in history that we should all be aware of. It is undeniable that the phenomenal performance MS leaves you spellbound, but not at the expense of being concerned and horrified by what you have seen. All I can say is to summarize: just saw. An intelligent and deeply moving film that (I promise) live in your memory long after the closing credits.
