"The Scarlet Claw" is probably the best of the Rathbone / Bruce films. The plot is very cool. I found the Scarlet Claw, The Thriller film more terrifying "The Hound of the Baskervilles." And, of course, is always wonderful Rathbone as Holmes. I would recommend this Scarlet Claw, The Thriller film to any fan of Sherlock Holmes or anyone who just likes mystery movies. |
Universal puts once again, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Watson and Holmes again. This time the duo is heard talking to an expert on cults and so on, and when they are thrust into a mystery of the death of a woman allegedly by the hands of a ghost. They must travel to the city of Le Mort Rouge (The Red Death) in Canada, where the conference was being held. Rathbone is in excellent shape as Holmes. He seems very comfortable with this role by this point that his mannerism just flow. As good as Rathbone, that is, the comic performance of Nigel Bruce as his bumbling companion Dr. Watson that really a whale of a job and mumbling through obstacle to their role. Bruce plays beautifully off Rathbone, and has a life of more than presence (steals many a scene might also add). The rest of the cast is, without doubt, all of quality. The direction of Roy William Neill is first class. He runs very smoothly with the improvement of the two central characters, but also creating a very efficient Moody atmosphere. The story is imaginative and not derived from a story Doyle. I like the way the Scripter succeeded mystery writer GK Chesterton in the name of the film. The final monologue recently by Holmes at the conclusion of the DivX film Scarlet Claw, The is a time of war thanks to Canada and the way it acts as a link to humanity. Interesting tribute. |
