"Closing the Ring" is pure schmaltz, I saw with my mother, who is absolutely adored. I, on the other hand, hated it! I am just giving it four stars and not because of the great Pete Postlethwaite, who was also the only reason I sat through it. Nice to see in any film, but was not given enough time on this screen. In fact, it was in vain. The screenplay is bog standard, horrible acting, Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine practically phone in their performances Plummer has a hilarious' drunk 'scene. Watch him! Shirley MacLaine and Neve Campbell have characters to be the most selfish, self absorbed ever seen on screen. The tariff quotas younger worse, Mischa Barton is probably the worst actress of her generation, and their male counterparts just as bad. Dire. Avoid at all costs.

The story of love lost to death during the Second World War will never be boring for anyone whose family was touched by the war. The question is, writers and actors can still make the real story? For those of us in the audience tonight in the projection room in Kingston, see the ring closure, the response was very satisfactory, "yes." Young players were able to create the unselfconscious optimism and sense of honor of their counterparts in 1940 to go to war, former members of the cast knew exactly how to represent the knowledge, understanding, forgiveness and that the current characteristics had learned from his experience in time of war, and remain with the punishment of such self-control.
