Recently widowed well-to-do Laura Henderson is at a bit of a loose end in inter-war London. On a whim she buys the derelict Windmill theatre in the West End and persuades impresario Vivian Van Damm to run it, despite the fact the two don't seem to get on at all. Although their idea of a non-stop revue is at first a success, other theatres copy it and disaster looms. Laura suggests they put nudes in the show, but Van Damm points out that the Lord Chamberlain, who licenses live shows in Britain, is likely to have something to say about this. Luckily Mrs Henderson is friends with him.

Oh is not it great? As a Brit, I get a little tee-ed with the "legacy" type of movie, the guy who present an image that never existed, but the presence of the old lady Mrs Henderson Presents offers a truly uplifting quality. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, all the results were excellent, Judes, of course, but Bob Hoskins as well ... oh, and teens - who reminded me of Tommy Tune in boyfriend - well worth a few pounds of money from anyone! I saw a preview screening and was fortunate to speak with Bob Hoskins after the movie. It was wonderful, a pocket-sized package of fun (although Bob, you owe me two fags). I asked him what it was working with the Dame (who has a reputation for being totally committed and therefore can be a little scary). He grinned a smile the size of the Dartford Tunnel and said that "Judy! She frightened the effing (though not say 'effing') lives away from me!" It's a great moment - is one of my heroes; impressive in the long Good Friday and Mona Lisa ... and a little gray-haired elderly woman terrified him! He said that the buck twenty-four hours a day and worked as a Trouper. Wonderful! I would absolutely recommend Mrs. Henderson Presents, is nostalgic, yes, it's a bit contrived, but hey, artistic license is allowed still does not it? And I'd rather do this than sit through turgid dross like Notting Hill or Four Weddings. As British films go - this could be just a bit signal a return - we can only hope.
Judi Dench is excellent in the title role of this British comedy, perfectly suited to his aging, but still Feisty character, and Bob Hoskins has a few moments too strong in support. With excellent costumes and sets, the film is able to provide an insight into both the depression era and the spirit of vaudeville at its peak of popularity. It is a delight to see, well done in almost all levels - even the numbers on the stage are entertaining to watch. It is also quite funny at times too, and touch on other occasions. Unfortunately a never know the characters, and in particular, other than those developed by Dench and Hoskins. This limits the way it is to see ... but it is still fun either way ... and the film avoids being too literal when it explores the nature of Dench.
As a feature of the close of 2005 San Luis International Film Festival, "Mrs. Henderson Presents" was shown at a theater almost full. Coming from the UK, the film is not a drama or a comedy. "Mrs. Henderson Presents" is best described as a "dramedy" mixed with a musical. Judi Dench dives into his customary role with ease, playing Laura Henderson. As a class, upper left a widow with lots of money, decides to buy a theater, that the names of El Molino. Through the love-hate relationship between Mrs. Henderson and her theater director (the brilliant Bob Hoskins), which presents the most revolutionary program in England: the naked woman on stage. "Mrs. Henderson Presents", constantly changes from drama to comedy, but it's so skillfully directed by Stephen Frears that maintains a fluid and elegant tone. This is a film that is told through the eyes of its main character, Laura Henderson, a realistic sense of optimism exists. The message is the naive Mrs Henderson grabs buoyancy of the continuing tragedy and sorrow. Stephen Frear the new movie is really heartbreaking and tragic, but ironically, it is incredibly fun. In "Mrs. Henderson Presents," The Windmill Theater is tall as a knight in shining armor for soldiers and the crowd of England. It is also a pleasant escape that undoubtedly deserves more than one visit.
I think that Judi Dench in a paper this week, first seeing Ladies in Lavender Lady and now Henderson Presents. This beautiful actress. Bob Hoskins is another favorite of having played a part in the wonderful Dunera Boys, a less known but excellent film. They were so well together in this movie and all the other parts are played with the same professionalism. I really can not fine any defects in the film. I'm a huge fan of music in a way that could have helped and could put some people off, but the numbers were well on stage. Suffice it to say ironically, drama and history to most people. This is what I would call a small film. No blood and guts, no massive video effects, but rather, from scenes of war, no massive attack scenes. Only a story about life during WW2 in the West End of London.
This little gem was given a bad review by a local newspaper critic and I could not disagree more! I loved it. Judy Dench (wonderful) and Bob Hoskins are fabulous in their roles and I loved the flirtatious hangover. This film made me laugh and mourn .... I left the theater feeling beautiful ... What more can you ask for in a movie? The history of the windmill and the Theater (ludicrious) laws that allow nudity on stage was very interesting. I think that young Will did very well in his first film, I am an oldies enjoying his singing. Overall a great movie, Judy Dench fans will not be disappointed, and I hope that some young people attending the film give it a go and it's worth seeing.
A delightful film. The idea that a movie about a strip joint could be as elegant and graceful seems absurd. However, here is a lover of the image of London's Windmill Theater whose motto "We have never closed" (or, as some wags used to say, "I never dressed") sustained through the Second World War, and at least in the 60s. Judy Dench seems to have thrown his Dameness aa high old time as very glamorous, slightly camp, septuagenarian. Bob Hoskins (also producer) is very limited yet determined as your business partner accusatory. Christopher Guest and puts in a surprise appearance as the Lord Chamberlin befuddled to have to grant a license to the company licentious. It is the software that came with the idea that remains absolutely naked on stage are "art". The representation of the London Blitz is romantic and tragic figure at a time. A must for Denchophiles, Anglophiles, lovers naked, entertainment types, and anyone who likes a good yarn and he said.
